Recap of session 1 w/ guests: Lou Piniella and Larry Rothschild

• Lou told Jim at the start of the off season that the Cubs needed more left handed hitting and speed in the off season.
• The Cubs are going to "bogey".
• Larry says that the team will get guys experience as much as they can during the spring.
• Lou and Larry said that Ryan Dempster's heart was into starting and that's why he was so successful. Ryan is more relaxed as a started according to Larry.
• Kap asked who Lou's lead off hitter was. Lou said that the Cubs won 97 baseball games with the team. He mentioned that we added Miles who could be an option.
• Larry thinks that Carlos will pitch better in 2009 than he did a year ago.
• Lou described working with Zambrano as "a adventure at times". He went onto says that he likes the way Big Z wants to win and compete.
• Larry thinks that Wrigley is a difficult place to pitch at times.
• Rothchild says that sometimes pitchers get a little to relaxed when the wind is blowing in.
• He adds that the elements effects games at Wrigley more than at any other park.
• Lou says stressed the importance of not walking people at Wrigley.
• He expects the Cubs to play as good as last year during the first 162 games and a lot better in the postseason.
• Piniella thinks that the whole 100 year thing put too much pressure on the Cubs.

Sessions 2 w/ Jim Hendry:

• Jim Hendry says that the DeRosa trade was an effort to get more left handed.
• Jim says he gets payed to make tough decisions.
• Hendry said that Kerry Wood's agent told Jim that Woody was looking for a 3 year deal, and the Cubs thought that that was too lengthy of a commitment.
• He described letting Wood go as "one of the saddest days of his career."
• Jim thinks the Cubs got a great deal for Kevin Gregg.
• Milton Bradley made a few mistakes, but he is good clubhouse guy and good teammate.
• Derrek Lee is thrilled that Bradley is a member of the Cubs.
• Jim thinks Cubs fans will love Milton.
• When Kaplan asked about Peavy, all Hendry could say was, "It really bothers me that other teams put our players on the trading block. 19 or 20 year old kids shouldn't be reading there name in the paper."
• He said "We will keep trying to get stronger and add pitching, whether it's that player or not."
• Jim says that if Kosuke Fukudome would have hit better in the second half of the year, he would have won a gold glove.
• Hendry thinks Kosuke will be "more like the Fukudome from the first half of last year."
• Lou is as good at there is at using the whole roster.
• Jim says that Rich Harden is "very good." He moved to Arizona to get more work this winter. He says Rich looks stronger and healthier than he did at the end of last year.
• Hendry said that Sean Marshall was a very under-rated guy for the 2008 team. Jim says he feels that sooner or later Marshall might deserve to be in the rotation instead of being a super sixth starter.
• Hendry won't add any big names without the new owner signing off on it.

Recap of Meet Cubs Management

WGN Radio did the Meet Cubs Management session at the 2009 Cubs Convention featuring Jim Hendry, Crane Kenney, and Randy Bush. The session was hosted by Dave Eanet and John Williams. Here's my recap:

• Hendry is frustrated that the Cubs have lost 6 post season games in a row.
• Jim says that we are "very close to a championship situation."
• He said that when you lose you all ways try to analyze it. "I don't think we lost our focus," "They want to win so much that the guys got worried and stressed after they lost the first game.
• Crane was asked for an update about the ownership situation. Kenney think we'll have an owner by opening day.
• The Cubs have played 2 full seasons being "for sale" but they have won the division both years.
• Everyone wants to see the ownership situation concluded, including the club.
• Kenney says that the economy is effecting all 30 clubs in baseball.
• The Cubs are one of the unique clubs that has a fan base that will support them even when it is a tougher time.
• John asked how difficult it was to let DeRosa go. Jim said that Mark was a good player and a terrific guy. Hendry's explanation was that the Cubs are trying to get more left handed.
• The 3 places on the field the Cubs can play a left handed hitter at is right field, center field, and second base. They traded DeRosa to create that 3rd position.
• The Cubs are going to keep doing what they can until they have a parade.
• Randy said that the Cubs are really thrilled with their system. He said that Lou has done a nice job of getting the young guy in their when they are brought up. Mitch Atkins, Darwin Barney, and Wellington Castillo are 3 guys that could help the team in the near future.
• Jeff Samadzija has been told to be prepared to start in Spring Training.
• They took questions from the crowd. The first question was about Peavy. Jim said that he cannot comment on Peavy because he is a member of another club.
• Hendry said the Cubs will continue to keep their eye out for starting pitching.
• "Hopefully we will continue to go out and get big name players," Hendry said.
• The Cubs are going to be in the top 5 payroll in the big leagues again this year, however the Cubs still do have a payroll.
• Hendry says that the Cubs really got 3 good players from the Indians.
• John asked if anyone has asked Bradley to behave a certain way. Hendry said that Bradley is allready a good teamate, and is a good guy to have in the clubhouse.
• Jim thinks Bradley "has reached a point in his life where he has matured".
• Hendry said he's never seen a player want to go to a certain team like Bradley wanted to come to the Cubs.
• The Cubs anticipate that Milton is going to be the everyday right fielder. Jim would be happy with 100-135 games.
• The Cubs got a positive response from all the players when they signed Bradley.
• Jim says he never gets caught up in what the other Cubs have done. He mentioned that there are a lot of good players still out there that could end up in our division.
• Hendry said that the 2004 team was the best team in the NL on paper, but 7 guys were on the DL by the end of May.
• The Cubs are not going about their bussiness thinking that winning the division is a lot.
• Crane says that having a priest bless dugout was one of the dumbest 3 things he's done with the Cubs. He says that if he could do it again he wouldn't have.
• The Cubs 2 goals in the off season were 1.resign Dempster, but 2.Try to get the lineup more flexible. They think that Milton Bradley brings a lot of good things to the ball club.
• Jim met with Bradley originally in November.
• Hendry described Dempster as a "gamer", "the real deal", and a "10 human being". Jim says he took less money to sign early with the Cubs.
• They guys think the team has real good balance. Jim says Lou likes versatile players, and speed game type players.
• Jim says that the Cubs bullpen has gotten very deep.
• He doesn't know were things are going in the next 7 weeks, but the Cubs are always open for business. He hopes that by opening day the ball club will be much better than last year.
• Hendry describe the Rich Hill situation as "very unfortunate". Hill has lost total command of the strike zone. Hill is out of options, and Jim says that he doesn't know whether Hill will get his stuff back in time to make a difference, and mentioned a change of scenery.
• Jim says that Jose Ceda was still a ways away from coming up to the big leagues and pitching in the 8th and 9th inning like Kevin Gregg can.
• He described that Marlins organization as "very good baseball people."
• Carlos Zambrano has the ability to be the postseason ace that the Cubs need. Big Z is still very young for all the experience he has.
• Crane Kenney says that Sam Zell has been a great owner. Crane has went to Sam and asked to do a lot of things and everything has been approved. Kenney compares Sam to Lou Pinellia, he expects results.
• Kenney and Zell had one argument.
• The guys don't seem to think that you can build a team for the postseason.
• Hendry said that you can't explain what happens in the postseason. He said that if you win the division every year eventually you break the door down.
• It is a collective decision if someone goes on the DL or is just day-to-day. He says that if someone has to sit out longer than 4-5 days, sometimes it is better to put the guy on the 15 day DL, and then call someone up so that you don't have to play with less than 25 guys.
• Jim says he's never had a relationship with a player like he has with Kerry Wood.
• Hendry says that he felt that a 3 year deal was not in the Cubs best interest. He says that a one year deal was never discussed.

Cubs Rumors

• Fred Mitchell said that Hendry seems to be open to anything. "There are some GMs you deal with who are all paralyzed by their caution and analysis. Jim is willing to get out there and make things happen."
• Kevin Towers said that the proposal from the Cubs for Peavy would fill several holes for the Padres.
• Jim Hendry said that his product shouldn't be judged until opening day.
• The Sun Times says the Chone Figgins is available via trade.
• Bruce Miles doesn't think that the Cubs will try to land Derek Lowe, Andy Pettitte, Tim Redding, or Ben Sheets.
• Derek Lowe could end up with the Cubs according to the Daily Herald. His name has popped up a lot in the last 7-10 days.
• The Baltimore Sun says that Roberts and O's have discussed a contract extension, but the 2 sides are far apart.
• Ken Rosenthal reports that there is a growing possibility that Roberts will be traded.
• Hendry said, "You deal with what you have on the wall now until somebody else is added. We'll still look at some possibilities."

The MLB Network crew talked about the Bradley signing today:

• Harold Reynolds thinks that Lou will keep Bradley under control.
• Joe MaGrane thinks the Cubs would have been better off with Bobby Abreu.
• MaGrane thinks Milton will impress Lou with his competitiveness.
• Jon Heyman is a big fan of what Jim Hendry has been doing the past few years.
• Jon says there are 2 issues with Bradley; clubhouse issues and injuries.
• Heyman thinks the Chicago media will give Milton a chance.
• He thinks Bradley should be more positive not just say he wants to be positive.

Milton Bradley was on Boers and Bernstein on 670 The Score today. Here the recap:

• Bradley says it's an "honor" to be in Chicago.
• He felt the Cubs had everything in place. They are a team that wants a championship just as much as he does.
• Bradley feeds off the energy of the fan. He plays every game with a passion.
• Bradley looks forward to playing under Sweet Lou.
• He says that gelling with teammates is the easy part for him.
• There are people in the media that have a lot to say about how he is in the clubhouse. He says talk to any guy that he ever played with not media members.
• Milton said that he will go out on the field every day with a passion and give every thing he's got but would not give his word that no outbursts will happen in Chicago.

Cubs Introduce Bradley

The Cubs had a press conference today to announce that the signing of Milton Bradley is official. The deal is 3 year, $30 million. I'll post a recap of the press conference coming up. Stay tuned...

Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney spoke first:

• This is the first time that a player who was not a Cub has said focused on wanting to come to Chicago the whole off season.
• Crane says Milton was very patient and thanked him and his team for that.
• He thinks Bradley will be a very productive player for the Cubs.

Jim Hendry was up next:

• He said dealing with Milton was a very positive process.
• The Cubs were really in need of landing an outstanding outfielder who can hit left handed.
• The Cubs have known all off season that they needed to get the right guy.
• Randy and Jim have talked about 1000 times on who would be the right fit. They did their homework.
• Jim and Milton had dinner together in LA. He came away thinking great things about Milton.
• Bradley told Hendry that he knew it would take a little time, but he wanted to become a Chicago Cub. That was on the 5th or 6th of November!
• The Cubs are convinced that Bradley is in really good health.
• The Cubs are thrilled to have him and he is exactly what they needed to help them get to the next few levels that they haven't been able to get to the past few years.

Next Bradley put on his Cubs jersey. He wears number 21, the same number Sammy Sosa made popular Cubs. So we have another #21 in Right Field. Bradley stepped up to the mic

• Bradley said that it is a great honor to say he's a Cub.
• He considers himself the most blessed man on the face of the earth today.
• Milton says the Cubs have been on his radar for awhile now.
• All he wants to do with the Cubs is WIN.
• He says he got nothing but honesty from Jim.
• Someone asked why he wanted to come to the Cubs. He said that going into every year the focus is winning the World Series.
• Bradley doesn't like people speaking about him if they've never met them before.
• Levine asked about him trying to stay on the field. He said that he has been on a good workout all off season.
• He says he doesn't have to explain the past "incidents"
• Bradley does everything he can to help his team win on each given day.
• He has spoke to Derrek Lee and Chad Gaundin about playing for the Cubs. Bradley says he's never talked to someone who didn't like playing for the Cubs.
• Bradley says he's an outfielder at heart not a DH.
• There is no pressure in baseball. It's easy!

Cubs Links, Rumors, Ect.

• Gordan Wittenmyer reports that those close to Jim Hendry expect him to restart the Jake Peavy talks.
• Hendry would still have to get the OK from the new ownership first.
• Wittenmyer says that the new ownership could be in place in just enough time for the Cubs to make a deal for Peavy.
• Dav van Dyck thinks Andy Pettitte could be a fit for the Cubs.
• The Cubs had looked at Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, and Adam Dunn but decided on Bradley because of what he brings on defense.
• Sources say that if Milton is on the field for less than 120 games the Cubs will be in trouble.
• Ronny Cedeno is the Cubs best bet to be traded. Cedeno ran afoul of Piniella the last two years with what the Cubs perceived to be careless play at times.

Marquis deal is finalized

The Jason Marquis trade to the Rockies has been finalized. The Cubs receive reliever Luis Vizcaino in return. Cubs GM Jim Hendry will continue to look for another starter for the team until pitchers and catchers report on Valentines Day, but he also feels good about some of the candidates in the organization. Sean Marshall, Angel Guzman, Kevin Hart, Chad Gaudin, and Jeff Samardzija are in the mix, but cubs.com called Samardzija a "long shot". I would like to see Samardzija get a chance because he grew up right by my home town, however I think Marshall deserves the job.

Hendry Quotes:

• "Anybody would love Marshall in that role and he did great at it, At the same time, in fairness to the young man, if he keeps improving -- he's made big steps each of the last years -- if he makes another step up and comes into camp and competes and wins a job, then he certainly has a right to stake a claim to that."
• "He proved to us last year, whatever role we put him in, and as tough as we made it on him, he did a quality job, sooner or later, you like to reward that, too."
• "We don't call anything a salary dump, we're no different than anybody else except maybe my buddy Brian Cashman. We have a payroll and a fair payroll. You still have to, in this job, especially the situation we have now, until there's a new owner, you follow the guidelines of the payroll and that's what we're doing."

Cubs in Winter Ball, Rumors, and More

Well, here's the latest Cubs rumors from yesterday and today.

• Buster Olney says that the Cubs have maxed out their spending this winter.
• Bruce Levine and others have been saying that the Bradley deal should be done around the first of the year, so we'll see what happens soon, I expect the Cubs to make at least 1 more move before the convention.
• Interesting article I found about Jim Hendry's first round picks.
• Jason Stark says that the Dodgers have contacted Adam Dunn. The Cubs, Nationals, Mariners, and Orioles all also have interest.
• Stark adds that the Cubs have believed to be his top choice before the Dodgers entered the mix.
• The Dodgers also have interest in Bobby Abreu. They seem to be interested in a lot of the same guys as the Cubs.
• Former Cub Micheal Barrett has agreed to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training with the Blue Jays.

Jim Hendry on Sports Central

Cubs GM Jim Hendry visited with David Kaplan to talk about the Cubs remaining offseason plans on Sports Central on WGN Radio last night. Here's my recap:

• Jim says that the economy is taking an effect on the baseball world. He says the Cubs are fortunate the their payroll didn't go down. He says some clubs are going to take more cutbacks than others.
• Kap suggested the Cubs getting a right handed bat that hits left handers. He says the Cubs still would prefer a left handed or switch hitter.
• An email asked if the Cubs ever considered moving Soriano back to second base. Jim says that Sori will stay in left field.
• Another question asked if Hendry still sees getting another starter. Jim says that you might try to make something work with an elite guy but the Cubs aren't searching for another starter but says that the new owner might have an impact on things like this.
• Jim says the if Greg Maddox wants to work with the Cubs he can work in Chicago any time he wants, he thinks Greg will get away from the game for some time and then might get back into baseball in some way.
• Kap asked about Ryan Sandberg. Jim said that the Cubs don't get hung up on moving up the latter with coaches in the minor leagues like players do. He says Rhino's done a terrific job in Peoria for 2 years and in the Arizona Fall League. He thinks that Sandberg can be a big league coach some day.
• Kap asked for thought about Kerry Wood. Jim think Kerry ended up in a great place and says that he will root for Woody except when he plays the Cubs for the rest of his career.
• Hendry said that Gathright was a real good sign that gains the Cubs speed and depth. Jim wants to add one more left handed hitting outfielder to the mix out there.
• Jim says that he likes Adam Dunn and says that the situation is his defense. He wouldn't rule a terrific hitter off the Cubs list though.
• Kap asked about DeRosa. Hendry said that he is just trying to make the Cubs better and sometimes you might have to consider trading someone you really like.

Cubs sign Joey Gathright

The Cubs have agreed to a 1 year 800,000 deal with Joey Gathright who was non-tendered by the Royals last Friday. Gathright adds speed off the bench and can play all 3 outfield positions. It seems that Felix Pie is out of luck because he is out of options which means that he can not be sent back to AAA and Gathright is a similar player to him except Joey is a better hitter. Gathright is a left handed bat, but the Cubs will continue to pursue a middle of the order, left handed bat for right field.
Quotes from Jim Hendry:

• "We set out to find a real speed guy for the club and a left handed hitter and he makes a lot of sense."
• "He's a world class speed guy who can do a lot of things for us."
• "If he's not starting, he's a tremendous piece off the bench every day."
• "We're a long way from opening day, a lot of things can happen."
• "I feel confident that we'll end up with a good left handed hitter, there's still a lot of things to do."

In my opinion, the Gathright move does add some speed and depth, but this isn't going what we were hoping for. I would expect that the Cubs still acquire 1-2 more left handed hitters that are everyday players, not just bench guy. I don't think the Cubs really needed another backup outfielder because we already have Reed Johnson (or Kosuke if Reed starts) and DeRosa or Hoffpauir can back up the corner outfield spots to give Soriano and our new right fielder days off.

Cubs Pull Out of Peavy Deal

Well after all that talk about San Diego right handed pitcher Jake Peavy, the Cubs have decided to pull out of the sweepstakes today. Here's quotes from Cubs GM Jim Hendry on the Peavy deal:

• "We knew going in we could line up tomorrow with a very good pitching staff"
• "It was one of those rare occasions that we thought it was worth going in to kick the tires and see if it was possible. As the week progressed, the volume of the depth of what we'd have to give up became the sticking point for me"
• "As the week went along, I could tell Kevin wasn't going to lower his stance on the talent which is his right. If he has the intention of keeping Jake then he has the right to get the best deal he can, or he has the option of keeping him."
• "I think the world of the pitcher and he would've made us better, but we were dealing from stength all along."
• "As much as adding Peavy would've been a great acquisition, for the good of the organization, I didn't think, today moving foward, it was the right thing to do."
• "He's a great pitcher, I would never close the door on trying to acquire him. He's one of the marquee guys in the game."
• "I never got comfortable with the volume of players it would take."
• "Besides the contract your taking on, you're also in a position where you're going to have to spend more money to replace some of the pieces you have, whether it's this year or the next. As the general manager of the club, you don't look at trying to make it work under the wire for '09."
• We just didn't get off the plane from Chicago and say, 'This is Jake Peavy week.'"

Padres GM Kevin Towers said "He said he's got other things going on, I respect his position.

So the Peavy saga comes to an end. Personally, I'm wish we would have got Peavy to build the Mega Rotation but I'm glad it wasn't streched out any longer. It was starting to get like the Brian Roberts thing last year. I trust that Hendry will do everything he can to make the team better for 2009.

So Here's whats been going on with rumors and Cubs notes in Vegas this week at Baseball's Winter Meetings:

• Ron Santo was not elected to the Nation Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee on Monday. He received only 60.1 percent of the vote falling shy of the 75 percent needed to make it. I won't share many personal opinions on this blog but it's obvious that Ronny belongs in Cooperstown.

Most of the Cubs talk this week has been related to Padres pitcher Jake Peavy. Different sources have been reporting totally different things. I'll try to sort things out:

• Sources have said that the Cubs and Padres have discussed a 3 or 4 team deal involving the Baltimore Orioles and/or the Philadelphia Phillies.
• The Phills have interest in Cubs utility man Mark DeRosa. Rumors have said that DeRosa could go to the Phillies in a 3 team deal that brings Peavy to the Cubs.
• John Perrotto from baseballprospects.com said yesterday that the Cubs might shop Carlos Zambrano after acquiring Peavy. This was a crazy rumor and the Cubs shot it down today.
• Today Jim Salisbury from Philly.com said that Kyle Kendrick could be included in a deal for Peavy.
• The Twins were discussed as a possible 3rd team today.
• Carrie Muskat of Cubs.com say that the Cubs will not trade DeRosa
• Corey Brock of MLB.com said that the Phillies might want Scott Hairston from San Diego.
• Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod has left the meetings, but Buster Olney of ESPN.com says he still thinks the Cubs will get the deal done.
• Other guys that could be leaving the Cubs in the Peavy deal include: Jason Marquis, Ronny Cedeno, Felix Pie, Josh Vitters, Sean Marshall, Rich Hill, Angel Guzman, Jose Ceda, Mike Fontenot, and Wellington Castillo.
• Some sources say that the Peavy talks are being slowed down because of 3 factors: 1. The sale of the Cubs. 2. The Cubs want to dump Marquis salary before adding Peavy's big contract. 3. Some say that the Cubs would like to get a left handed bat that plays right field before adding Peavy.

Speaking of the Cubs looking for a right fielder....

• Jim Hendry met with Seth Levinson, who represents free agent outfielders Milton Bradley and Raul Ibanez today according to Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000.
• Bruce says that Lou Piniella told him the Cubs will add a left handed bat within the next couple of days.
• The Cubs seem to be closest to signing Milton Bradley.

Also former Cub Kerry Wood is close to signing with Clevlend. It will be hard to see Kerry in a different uniform and I think that was a big mistake by Jim Hendry. However, I do think Carlos Marmol will pitch well in the closers role next season.
