Cubs Sign Milton Bradley; Updated

According to ESPN the Cubs have signed Milton Bradley to a 3 year, $30 million deal. The deal is pending a physical. Bradley led the AL in OBP. He hit .321 with 22 homers for Texas a year ago. He will balance the lineup and is a middle of the order left handed bat with power and good defense. The only minus is that we lose DeRosa from the clubhouse who is a great guy and replace him with a guy who has anger issues. Bradley is a switch hitter. The Rangers would get a draft pick from the Cubs for losing a Type B free agent.

Milton Bradley Notes:

  • Has played for Montreal (2000-01), Cleveland (01-03), Dodgers (04-05), A's (06-07) Padres (07), and Texas (08).
  • Career .280 average.
  • 103 career HR
  • 399 career RBI
  • 30 years old
  • Switch hitter, throws right
  • MLB Debut on July 19, 2000
  • In 2005, he accused teammate Jeff Kent of being racist.
  • In 2007, he tore his right ACL while being restrained by Padres manager Bud Black during an altercation with an umpire.
  • In 2008, attempted to confront TV announcer Ryan Lefebvre in the press box following a game due to what he believed were unfair comments made on the air.

Bruce Levine was on the Waddle and Silvy show today on ESPN 1000 to talk Cubs:

  • Silvy asked why the Cubs traded DeRosa. Levine says that the Cubs will sign Bradley with part of the money that they get from DeRosa and Marquis trades.
  • He says after the Bradley signing, what the Cubs do next will depend on what the new owner says.
  • Levine expects a middle infield platoon in 2009 with Theriot, Miles, and Fontenot.
  • Bruce seemed to support the DeRosa trade and Miles signing.
  • Waddle asked about Kosuke. Levine says that he might be a platoon player in center with Johnson and sub in right for Bradley.
  • He expects Gathright to go in on defense late in game.
  • Levine reports that the Cubs lead off man is yet to be determined.
  • Silvy thinks that the Cubs should go after Manny Ramirez. (something I mentioned on my blog on Dec. 23). He said that Soriano could play second base with Manny in left. I love this idea, but it's not going to happen.

Who do you think will break more bat over his knee; Bradley or Big Z?

I'll have more info, throughout the night.
